James Joyce
Exiles
Direction: Roula Pateraki

5 November 2010 - 13 February 2011

Tickets advance booking starts on November 2nd 2010, at Theatre's Box Office.

The Exiles, a text written in 1914, is the sole dramatic work by the great Irish author, James Joyce. Joyce, overtly influenced by Ibsen, his unconditional admiration for whom he expresses unfalteringly, appears to set out from the point that the Norwegian author leaves off, with his swan song When We Dead Awaken, namely the likelihood of existence after contrition. With Exiles, Joyce deftly constructs a work which he describes as a “three cat and mouse acts”.

In this arcane creation the dominant motive is the exile. A man exiled by another man, a man exiled by society, a man exiles by a woman, a man exiled by his inner peace. At the same time, this play expounds on the idea of “absolute” freedom through human relationships that are perennially endangered by passions and cravings, and doubt, a factor arising ineluctably from such an absolute freedom...

The basic plot of the Exiles comprises two ménage-a-trois: one involving Richard Rowan (a writer from Dublin, who has as of late returned from his self-imposed exile in Rome), Bertha (his companion) and his friend, Robert Hunt (a journalist)˙ and the second among Rowan, Hunt and his cousin Beatrice.

The author of Ulysses presents us with a work celebrating the freedom of spirit and body. The play was initially produced at Munich in 1919. In 1926 it the first London production met with George Bernard Shaw’s admiration. The most successful production of the Exiles has been the one directed by Harold Pinter in 1970 at the Mermaid Theatre, which was jubilantly received by the  press all around the world.
