Daemon
Sostenuto assai cantabile
by Maria Efstathiadi
Syn-Epi (+,X) Theatre Company has the honour to join forces with the Greek Festival, for a second time. It is of big importance, the fact that the Greek Festival responded with great warmth in both of our co-operations, in the co-production of two newly presented greek plays.
Under Athens Festival 2011, Maria Efstadiadis' last play Daemon, Sostenuto assai cantabile shall be presented for the first time in Greece* at theatre Apo Michanis (Ex Machina Theatre), from 23 to 27 June. The play is directed and performed by Roula Pateraki.
The multivoiced monologue Daemon has its roots at Fyodor Dostoyevsky's Demons; more specifically, at the point where Nikolai Stavrogin confesses his heinous act, that is the rape of the twelve-year-old Matriosa and her resultant suicide, which he didn't prevent though he could have had.
Maria Efstathiadi boldly reverses fictional truth, by bringing Matriosa to life and putting her narrate -in her fifties now- the day of her suicide, through three different voices; her being a child in love with Stavrogin; her meeting with him at her eighteen years of age; their short and turbulent relationship till his suicide and Matriosa's adhesion to him until her death.
This version of the story is just a pretext the writer uses in order to describe the force and madness of desire, a woman's sexuality and love, as well as the denial of loss.
